ueberschall liquid instruments is a company with a long history of releasing commercial plug-ins for music production. their first product was the ‘liquid instrument library’ (li): a collection of dsp effects, both vsti and rtas (au and aax). they subsequently released the li voice plug-in (sos april 2007), which offers a collection of interesting vocal filter-style effects and, finally, last year’s li the voice, a collection of wet and dry processing effects targeted at brass ensembles. perhaps their ‘baby’ is the li horn section, which is aimed at musical phrases from the horn section and which can be used either mono or as a multitimbral plug-in. ‘overflowing liquid’ from ueberschall liquid instruments is the ‘big brother’ of the ‘overflowing horn section’..
piano often has more than one octave in one key, so in order to give the most accurate representation of the instrument, the interface provides three octaves. the lowest assignment is c2 to f2, the next c3 to f3 and the top is c4 to g4. each of these are three semi-octaves which might all be assigned to be part of one note. if you do set program 7, 8 and 9 as having c3, c4 and f4 notes, then going to a different program and back to the top will change which of those notes are assigned.
when you’re recording, the liquid instrument plug-in automatically selects the highest note that’s available in the current program. so you’ll need a way to use the plug-in’s notes, so we have three modes of operation: the top octave, the bottom octave and the ‘other’ mode.
in the top and bottom modes, all three octaves are provided so that you can mix-and-match notes. you don’t need to open a program for each note, just press the note and the appropriate program will appear.
