Short game size is key. Why?
Pixels Huh took almost a year to create. To make a game with such a small budget I had to get creative. I started by making a game focused on one level and perfecting it. Later on I kept building upon that. I spent a few months developing small puzzle aspects to make the game more enjoyable and longer-lasting.
As a concept, the world of The Librarian is something that I’ve thought about for a very long time. I’ve wanted to make a very simple, beautiful and colorful platformer since I was little.
What is in this game?
When you wake up in a strange room full of books you have no idea of where you are, or how you got here. You have no idea of your identity, only that you feel very special. The books are not just pictures. They seem to whisper words to you. You need to seek out these books and put the puzzle together to understand what is going on.
What makes this game special?
I wanted to make the game feel like a dream. Small, simple, beautiful and colored to make you feel like you are in a beautiful relaxing place. That’s why I focused on creating a minimalistic sound design, but with the right music to make you feel like you are

The Library is not a sandbox. Puzzles are presented in a ‘You have to do this… in this order… to that’ manner. In fact, there are no random things happening in the Library. There are only puzzles to solve. The puzzles always fit the genre that it belongs to and help to expand the library’s worldview.
What I like to do is to make the player solve puzzles while gradually making the puzzles themselves more complex. This way, when the player completes a certain amount of puzzles, the puzzles begin to grow and increase in difficulty.
Note: In the original version of the game (and in the Special Edition), there were some puzzles that were just done in a short amount of time, but could be revisited later to give more depth to the game. In this version, some puzzles were made into levels.
Every puzzle has a minimum amount of time in which it needs to be completed in order to unlock the next puzzle. Some puzzles take a certain amount of time to be unlocked and some don’t. A time-limit is clearly visible in the game’s HUD. Sometimes it can be hard to see, but if you need to solve the puzzle within a certain amount of time, you can always look at it from the gameplay’s timeline.
Everything has a name, meaning that it’s possible to talk about puzzles, not about objects. It also has a description, showing the player how to complete the puzzle.
Some puzzles can be solved in several ways. Some are made up of several objects. Some have two solutions, and some require a lot of objects, which makes it hard to find them. I prefer to make puzzles where the player has a large selection of options to explore. It makes things a little bit more complicated for the player, but it’s also the reason why they need to invest so much time to understand the puzzle and how to approach it. If you look at the original game, you’ll find that some of the puzzles are not as complicated as they might seem at first.
Saving the Library is a global objective that has a lot of consequences in the game. In some cases, if you go against the Library, all the books will be destroyed, even if you have completed their puzzles. That’s why the player has to be very careful in his choices. The Librarian (Special Edition) is an original English language manga written and illustrated by Tamora Pierce and published in 2000 by Del Rey. The manga was created and illustrated by Pierce and released together with an animation adaptation by Over the Garden Wall. The adaptation is more faithful to the text than the original, which is notable as being an independently-published adaptation, rather than an adaptation of other material (e.g. a video game or a television series).
Plot
Seventeen-year-old Tessa is a sheltered and rather mundane young woman. She lives at the Citadel, in a set of rooms provided by her parents to the children in the household. Tessa constantly works on the words of the magic that she is taught, focusing particularly on warding, a diverse and potent form of magic which creates protective spells. Most of her peers seem to think that Tessa is insane, which is why they only know her by her slave name, Rhialta. She is forced to wear a hair-shirt laced with “magical wards” to remind her of the cost of what she is doing.
At the Citadel, Tessa is instructed in a rich assortment of magical spells. Magic is heavily regulated at the House of Knowledge, for fear of allowing a single person to become a magus, which can be both destructive and extremely rare (one in 10,000,000). Learning is done only by senior apprentices, whose level rises with age. Once they have reached the necessary level of mastery, apprentices can start studying magic independently to reach the next level. This is rare, and happens only after a full year of studying at the Citadel. Tessa joins a full apprentice school at the age of twenty.
The plot opens when Tessa becomes a junior apprentice. This brings her closer to the mages and their secrets, but it also puts her life in danger, especially after the death of her stepmother, Alea, as well as her friends. Tessa is visited by the young mage she would have become, Hadrian Blackgate, who would later become her lover, teacher and mentor. Blackgate takes Tessa to the ruins of the Valdemar capital of Falmea, where Adalric, a history reader, has discovered the location of the greatest magus school, which is currently guarded by an opponent who Blackgate has encountered before.
