our next morning saw us heading west again to the nanga parbat massif. our route took us by a region where there is a socio-economic system which has a fascinating caste system at its heart, dominated by an ancient clan called the barlas. these herders live in primitive valleys, and it is from them that we have managed to secure the services of a chowkidar to look after our campsite.
on our way to nanga parbat we headed from village to village through a narrow gorge filled with streams, angling with the strong current in our legs, and making our way through the thickly wooded canopies above.
on the lower slopes of the mountain, one can see interesting old ruins of dwellings, many containing numerous painted stones. the inhabitants of these areas live a simple pastoral life, and have undertaken on their own initiative and with great bravery to make a complete renovation of the old systems.
while we walked i thought about my travels. we crossed the french border in ladakh. so we had gone through four countries and travelled between 6,000 and 8,000 metres altitude. we had a local lama and a guide, two chowkidars, and a local woman friend who made us a kadak chot (cooked puffed meal) to keep us going. i had a tent, cooking gear and personal items. we had come from delhi, walked across india, climbed up the himalayas, through bhutan, nepal, pakistan, afghanistan and china.
one of the most memorable books of 2015 was leila khaled’s lady jabal. now, it is the first book from the self-described, “revolutionary, storyteller, second class refugee, first class human being” to be available in canada, thanks to tar-scar books. a successful film is in the works with actress laila ben ali, leila’s sister, also playing a leading role in the feature. (editor’s note: it may have been filmed, but a link has not been found). the book was released in the united states in october, 2015. together with a screenplay by leila khaled, stephen robinson (writer, director of the contract, punisher, limitless and seven pounds [ citation needed ] ) and toby white (editing, screenwriter, director of brotherhood), lady jabal is a stirring work of revolutionary fiction about the palestinians’ freedom struggle from the 1967 war to the beginning of the 1990s. occupation, resistance and heroism are the central themes, and they come to life through the suffering of the real heroines of the story, the arab women.
