The fictional story of a mixed-race woman and former slave who serves as the basis of Morrison’s 1989 literary masterpiece, Beloved. The novel depicts the harsh life led by a former slave, Sethe, in a small Kansas town after her departure from Kentucky in 1913. The novel has been called a family saga and other interpretations, but rather than write a family saga, Morrison writes an “American fable” or more plainly, a “shamanic myth” (Henley, 31). Morrison contends that American slavery is “at the center of our discourse on history and contemporary America” (Morrison, xiv). Morrison suggests that the symbolic gift Beloved brings to Sethe is “the ability to dream of free herself in her world” (Morrison, xiv). She says that Beloved is “a baby of the zangay, the side of us that has yet to be born, just as Beloved herself is…the woman she will grow up to be” (xv). Morrison points out that Sethe has three daughters (Beloved, Sobee, and Denver) and two sons (Sterling and Marvel, respectively). Denver is the only one with an “Afro.” Morrison writes that Denver is “plain and homely, the only one to have an Afro,” while Sethe’s husband, Baby, “looks like he ought to be in a ‘little house on the prairie’ and not in a modern city” (xv). Sethe also has “it” from her first husband, Pompey, a female love rival to Baby. In addition to him, she has another love rival, who is the self-proclaimed “good” or “white” Sethe. This is the dramatic part of the novel. After Beloved is born, Sethe has her first daughter, Beloved, who becomes severely ill. She seeks treatment in a hospital, which is the setting for the next 100 pages of the novel. Beloved dies. Sethe buries her, and then is seized with the need to remain in hiding, to put as much distance between herself and the world as possible. The last chapters of the book are set at this time, among the clandestine locations she has created in the surrounding area. These settings of her island are like being trapped in a sort of “magic circle” (Morrison, 19). She is rescued by Baby, who has learned of Sethe’s hiding place. She is taken back to Sweet Home, the plantation that was her home before she left in 1913. Morrison’s writing style is vividly astute as well as unwaveringly poetic, but consistently basic. Many of her lengthy paragraphs of the novel are single sentences that describe both the setting and the character. There is so much action in the novel that there is rarely any long dialogue. Her writing style is at times rapid, but other times is slightly stilted or loose. Her style of narrative storytelling is similar to the way in which Billy Jean King plays tennis. She describes her very unusual way of playing a sport in which she barely takes her eyes off the ball, even though she is at least 70 percent blind. She lets the ball be her guide in her flowing swinging arm, which is her racket (Morrison, 20). In a more serious context, Morrison suggests that the fantastic nature of the tale she is attempting to tell is an attempt to bring magic realism to the American novel (Morrison, 20). Morrison uses a blend of fiction, autobiography, and historic documents to create Beloved. She uses a blend of these different forms of narrative to introduce Beloved, the story’s central character.
