The 40 Year Old Virgin opens with two boxers, Billy The Kid McDonnen and Henry Razor Sharp, who are friends and co-workers at an electronics store. Billy is the seasoned veteran, a former middleweight champion, while Henry is hot new prospect, a handsome young fighter determined to make a name for himself. Billy was retiring, however he received a letter from former middleweight champion, Dicky Blayde, that put Billy in mind of a final challenge. Dicky, who lives in Europe, has always longed to return to his home country, Ireland, and he wants to fight his former opponent, Steve Carrell, in a three-fight series to determine who will be the champion of Ireland, and ultimately, of the world. Steve, who doesn’t want to fight Dicky, must take the fight to defend his title.
