The 2009 album “Snakes & Arrows Live” was something of a success selling more than 130,000 copies in its first week of sales. The set document Rush at their very best pulling out all the stops, and including material from the band’s back catalogue as well as new material from their latest album, “Clockwork Angels.” Credit for adding to the visual spectacle of the show must go to the Flint, Michigan outfit “Flint,” who were responsible for the spectacular set designs. The stage and backdrops are detailed to amazing degrees, and the effects used to change the set-up – and add to the show – are constantly surprising and challenging to behold. Credit for the multi-language DVD must also go to “Flint,” who filmed the entire show to the attention of a supreme DVD production commitment, and left us the job of making it sound spectacular. The result is a DVD that blends every element of a Rush concert into a single flawless package.
As though the DVD was not enough of a show stopper, the album also promised a listening experience that suited the music – and recorded what the band are best at: heavy prog rock. With this in mind, “Snakes & Arrows Live” may well be the most in-depth listening experience of the album. In fact, it almost seems like the DVD is a separate album in total. This is because the DVD version adds almost 50 minutes of footage never seen before: it is not simply a video of the album. These tracks are simply indispensible to the album; they are more than just a bonus: they are essential! Additionally, and in the name of scientific research (proof of my assertion that the album was more than the DVD), I have added the audio to each track. This gives the listener a chance to judge for themselves just how well recorded and assembled the album is.
