The chief executive officer of the Ontario Medical Association says people should be concerned about the situation that is playing out in the health-care system.

“We are receiving reports from our front line — not just doctors, but nurses and even pharmacists in their practices — about patients in distress as the result of an inequitable system,” Dr. Chris Simpson said.

“It’s about access and wait times, and that extends to getting the services that people need, the prescription drugs that they need, and the services that patients need to be treated for chronic diseases.”

Simpson said one of the most-pressing issues facing patients is a lack of primary care doctors in some parts of the province.

“We are facing a nationwide shortage of physicians, but Ontario is doing a little better than the rest of Canada in terms of having numbers,” he said.

The problems have also been complicated by the number of solo practitioners in the province.

“Patients are really struggling to find those physicians who have time to talk to them, and to talk in a continuous, ongoing way,” Simpson said.

Long waits for emergency services

Simpson said a spike in serious injuries including assaults, overdoses and even suicide deaths in the province’s communities have been exacerbated by the shortage of doctors, nurses and medical services and substandard wait times.

“I think one of the things that we have to look at is a whole of-system approach,” he said.

The OPSO was unaware of the situation until CBC News contacted the organization about complaints patients are making with their doctor about wait times.

“We are aware of the problem,” said OPSO spokesperson Nicole Gossage. “We are looking at what the reports are, and we are also talking with them to help alleviate any concerns.”
