Obviously we dont have the tourism that a really strong cultural event brings but we have had people from all over the world, even from places like Taiwan, coming to the Open Studio and enjoying it. So it can be that.
And of course for us the ethos of Open Studio as a place was to connect people. And that means not only connecting artists of different nationalities and cultures to people who like them but also their families. So you would have people coming from different parts of Australia and other parts of the world to this place which is definitely more comfortable and familiar and closer to their own culture.
One of the studios has seen people grow up in it. Kirsty Buckles, a dancer with the studios, grew up here. She went onto win the National Dance Awards for Best Female Dancer in 1998, then went onto dance in over 50 countries worldwide, and then joined the studios in 2014, aged 32.
Johanna Burt has been working in the studios for over a decade. Johanna now lives here and is a regular character at the studios. Her quirky personality and love for creativity is infectious. She is one of the guides at Northcode, the studios Theatre.
It was fantastic to meet new people at Open Studio. There is a really strong community here at Southside. The people on the Southside are friendly and welcoming and showed real interest in my furniture business. The art was also great. There was a laser cutting showcase and a series of really cool projects with handmade jewellery and unique furnishings that caught my eye.
The original brochure was printed in Hungarian and Spanish. I didnt really have time to dive into the translated material. My offer to return for three nights for free was declined. I was surprised and disappointed. I think its possible the owner of the studio failed to market the event and did not know what it was. Maybe he didnt like the idea of having strangers in his home, trying to sell him things.
What has been most unique about the studios, and what is unique to Melbourne, is the unique way the community interacts with the studios. If you look at the overall context, Melbourne is a melting pot of culture, with people of all backgrounds, nationalities, and personalities.
We have had artists from many walks of life – including dancers, actors, writers, teachers and so on – all of whom have had an experience with the studios. The studios are a place where you can reflect and look at things in a different way. Artists, musicians and dancers are all people who take time out to reflect and think about their lives. The studios are unique in that they give people an opportunity to do that.
Whether it be artists, musicians, or people who like to make their own, get together, and have a communal experience with a vibrant atmosphere, the studios are unique and valuable in the Melbourne community. With such a rich cross-section of people in the community, it really means that every single studio offers something different and unique, whether it be in one studio you will find people chatting in a local dialect or in another studio you might find a silent camper. For many people, the studio is their space and they come to meet people and have a good time. I think that there is no one place on earth where you get this cultural diversity.
Over the past decade, the studios have attracted more than 100,000 people per month to their studios. The artists, musicians and dancers who work for the studios are able to go on to have successful careers in their own right. They then go on to attend the world-renowned MDM Artists School, and perform, teach and write here.
