Why does my chrome extension background page ignore my command to save page data as a localStorage variable?

I am creating a chrome extension that allows people to save URLs of pages they visit. In order to accomplish this, I am using a background page that listens for a message in the message array in the background.js file. Here is the relevant snippet:
chrome.runtime.onMessage.addListener(
function(request, sender, sendResponse) {
if(!$scope.message)
$scope.message = request;
else
sendResponse(true);
});

I am then trying to store a page’s URL into localStorage using the following code:
$scope.pageURL = localStorage.getItem(“pageURL”);

Here is the problem I am having. Every time I visit a page, it correctly stores the page’s URL into localStorage, but it only seems to do so when I reload the page. I need to somehow get this to work without having to reload the page.
If anyone has any insight on what is going on here, I would be very appreciative.

Id2d is simple to use:

Create configuration file that lists the database information including the username, password, server, database name and table name. This is used to connect to the database.

Type the SQL statements, one by one, into the SQL textarea.

Press the ‘Execute’ button to transfer data.

If the connection to the database failed, the error message and the SQL statement will be displayed in the textarea.

If the transfer is successful, the textarea will be cleared and the database table structure will be displayed.

If the transfer is a batch, the user will be prompted to select tables to transfer one by one.

If the transfer is in real time, the user will be prompted to select tables to transfer one by one in the background and the transferred data will be displayed in the table

If the transfer is on demand, the user will be prompted to select tables to download one by one.
