this is far more of an issue with idm than abc news. i’ve used idm on abcnews.com before, and it’s a very fast download. i believe in april you posted here that idm was changing the way that the js from an abc news page was loaded. this change is purely in idm. there is no evidence that idm was changed on any other site and this change was not part of the official 3.0 release.
please don’t. no legitimate download site uses it. biggest problem is the ‘attempt to contact’ problem (see site above for info) most of the time the download doesn’t even begin. it can easily use up to 20-50% of a users memory usage. it is a browser’s worst enemy to get rid of it.
i am very glad that i use idm for download management. i have only had one really bad experience. thats the website microsoftupdate.com. i unplug my modem for a few days so i can use it at night. when i come back the site is dead. no response at all. using your credit card to log in doesn’t work either. i tried everything, all the right links, finally got a friend to log in for me at the last minute, and there was no damage done. otherwise it is perfect, except maybe the fact that its windows only (from what i can find on the website).
i, like many others, don’t like to have to dig through forums and find a way to make sure that my firebox is running latest. however, i would have to guess that i could probably get through the entire archives. and then, would i have any guarantees that my browser would be the same as with the previous build? probably not.
i made a backup of all my add-ons and restored them using the latest build of idm. everything ran fine. the only thing was that it wouldn’t start up or even pop up a window. fortunately the idm.exe and idmupdate.exe were able to function normally but it was a bummer to have to do that.
