HQPlayer 3.13.3

hqplayer was designed for use with the jvc hd7 amp. it does not work with the jvc hd701, but in my opinion the sound is very similar. both integrated amps sound best in this product, but i think there is no comparison to the ves-tl3, at least not in my experience. and the sound is better than the jvc hd7, in my opinion. and the sound quality is very good and efficient, something i really liked.

the next question is what to do about the cables. i have many, many cables in my collection, but the 1gbps usb 3.0 cables from m-audio are the most flexible and versatile. so instead of sending hqplayer to the tt 2, i’ll just plug the hqplayer right into the dac. however, i’ll likely have to use a dac box to protect the m-audio cables from getting whipped around too much, and i’ll probably need a rack mount to keep it stable and also to be able to switch back and forth between the 1gbps usb 3.0 and m-audio cables.

i dont have a clear plan yet, but i do have high hopes for hqplayer. and i cant see any reason why i cant use it on the tt 2. it just needs some dsp for multi-channel filtering and room correction. the box is on back order right now, so when it comes, i’ll be sure to post some video of it in action. i just cant wait. if you use any of the hqplayer filters or have any feedback on it, please let me know. i’d love to hear from you.

i received many emails requesting a review of hqplayer: a $260 piece of software that is potentially better than the $5,000 chord electronics hugo m scaler. im setting up a new listening room so i figured this was worth looking into. if i could save a ton of money and have one less box, power supply, and cable to worry aboutwhy the hell not. ive tried roons upsampling feature and it wasnt great (sounds better without it).

the sound quality of hqplayer alone is very good, better than many others, when hqplayer is playing pcm from the dac the performance is very good, the only problem is that it does not upsample (and thus cannot take advantage of the full range of the dac) if hqplayer is playing pcm sourced from apps or other (and generally more expensive) sources like spotify or other players.
when the stream is first set up, it is set to dsd128 (the next is dsd256 which is the default) – this means the stream will use the “ttscaler”. then, if the ttscaler is set to “ramon” the stream defaults to only using half the range of the dac.
i wish hqplayer had the means to include a useful trial before purchase – the basic setup is pretty easy to use, especially with the older os 1.5.3. it is essential to be able to reproduce the sound on your target media, especially when buying for a friend. it might seem relatively basic, but even a connection set-up is a bit of a chore, even in 2016.
it is hard to imagine that such an industry leading product is deemed to have nothing but’minor’ issues, and i have no idea why the product is free to use as well (if you dont pay for the version). the advice ive been given is that it is free for testing. it would be nice to have a single contact at hqplayer to deal with this sort of thing, so that, for example, a user of the os could ask a technical question directly and get a useful and appropriate answer. this wont fix the $800 price tag, but at the very least it would mean a more usable product.
i guess im not just trying to understand what the problem is – the lack of technical support is of course something that im very keen to understand. the other question concerns the cost of the support resources (staff time, and whatever a contractor will cost).
