In 1962, singer/songwriter Billy Joel was born as Billy Zimmer on January 1, 1949 in Brooklyn, New York. He created his first demo tape at the age of 17 and was signed to manager Jeff Bale’s Small Management in 1970. With Small Management, Joel recorded ‘She’s Got A Way’ (Delaney & Bonnie), the first of many high profile hits over the next thirty years, which eventually found their way onto the soundtrack of the 1978 film Grease. In the summer of 1978, the band also performed in three sold out shows in Billy Joel’s teenage years at the iconic Electric Lady Studios in New York City. By 1981, The Hassles had acquired the publishing rights to Joel’s first hit “Captain Jack” and released the track in the U.S. on their debut album ‘Like It Or Not.’ In the same year, Joel also cut down his long hair and adopted the name Billy Joel. While he was still in the band, the Hassles released two more albums, one of which contained Joel’s next hit, ‘Just The Way You Are.’ In 1984, The Hassles disbanded after becoming members of The Buddy Miles Express and Joel joined Qwest Records, where he released four successful albums over the next few years. In 1991, Joel released Turnstiles which contained his biggest hit “My Life, his first hit to make it to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his second consecutive single to chart there and the biggest hit of his career. It also reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart and was the highest selling single of the year in the U.S. His next single, ‘The Longest Time’ hit number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1992 and became the first single of Joel’s career to reach gold certification. Two years later, Joel had his third consecutive top ten single, ‘Only The Strong Survive,’ which became Joel’s second number 1 hit in Japan. With the success of his albums, and the higher profile of his music, Joel became one of the world’s most successful solo artists. Over the next twenty years, Joel released a total of 15 studio albums, including several duets with artists including Elton John and Tony Bennett.
