The Feed (2019)

The Black Mirror comparisons are inevitable with this British series about technology gone wrong. Set in a futuristic London, The Feed centers on an implant that lets people livestream their lives without needing to press a button on a phone. No, absolutely nothing goes wrong. An impressive cast includes David Thewlis and Michelle Fairley. While it’s not as polished or deep-cutting as Black Mirror, The Feed is still worth a look.

Upload (2020—)

Upload’s blueprint combines Black Mirror and The Good Place to deliver a lighthearted take on the virtual afterlife. In the near future, humans can be uploaded into a digital heaven, where they can still interact with the living. Even when dead, computer programmer Nathan can’t escape his overbearing girlfriend. Meanwhile, he has help solving what might have been his own murder. An occasionally witty comedy set in an ever-intriguing digital space.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (1981)

Before the 2005 movie starring Martin Freeman, Douglas Adams’ classic sci-fi comedy franchise brought this cult ’80s TV series. Making the most of visual trickery, the six-episode series successfully brought Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Trillian, Zaphod Beeblebrox and Marvin to the small screen.

Humans (2015-2018)

Humans might not be entirely original, but the assembled parts sing. A British family purchases an artificially intelligent robot called a “synth” to help out with their busy lives. This grounded approach to sentient, possibly dangerous robots is one of Humans’ greatest strengths. At the sweet center: an innocent bond between the family’s youngest daughter and Gemma Chan’s elegant and efficient synth Anita. A mystery draws the family into the origins of the robots, who explore requisite philosophical themes such as humanity, pain, memories and reality.

Electric Dreams (2017-2018)

Electric Dreams lives up to its name, each episode of the anthology series a vibrant, zfilm-hd polished product whirring on the ideas of its source material: The works of Philip K. Dick. As with most anthologies, some episodes are better than others, but if you’re craving storytelling with Black Mirror-like setups, let this reverie slip over you.

The Man in the High Castle (2015-2019)

The Man in the High Castle imagines an alternate history where the Axis powers (Rome-Berlin-Tokyo) win World War II. Based on a Philip K. Dick novel, the series follows characters in the ’60s who live in a parallel universe, where Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan control the US. But there’s impossible newsreel footage surfacing of a world where Germany and Japan lose the war, causing some to rebel. To really hammer home its dystopia credentials, The Man in the High Castle is steered by producer Ridley Scott. Fully realized and with a focused plot, this is gripping TV.

Counterpart (2017-2019)

Counterpart stars J.K. Simmons playing off J.K. Simmons. Get excited about that for a second. Set in Germany during a cold war, the sci-fi thriller follows a lowly office grunt dejected by his grim life. Tales from the Loop (2020—)

Not just another show about a small town where strange things happen, Tales from the Loop has layers beneath its beautiful surface. Based on a narrative art book by Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, the series is stunning to look at. Meticulous, symmetrical frames somehow give off a painterly feel. The interconnected townspeople are similarly nuanced, their stories exploring loneliness, aging and the impact of technology.

BBC America

Orphan Black (2013-2017)

In more ways than one,  is the Tatiana Maslany show. Before she becomes a household name thanks to Disney Plus’ upcoming She-Hulk, see her play no fewer than 14 characters in one series, including a hallucinated scorpion. Just let that sink in for a second. Orphan Black sews smart sci-fi concepts into a fast-paced thriller, galloping along with added mystery and comedy in its stride. A must-watch sci-fi series exploring the nature vs. nurture debate.

Amazon Studios

Night Sky (2022—)

isn’t the most evocative title, and the series doesn’t reach the hard sci-fi highs some people may be searching for. Though the series features a slow-burn mystery involving an alien planet, its greatest strength is the moving, at times surprisingly funny drama between an old couple, the most unlikely of protagonists. Facing health problems, let alone dangerous new guests, Franklin and Irene York (the immense J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek) do their kind-hearted best to make sense of a portal to a mysterious, desolate planet.

Paramount Plus

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022—)

The Star Trek series just keep on coming. Set in the decade before Star Trek: The Original Series, Strange New Worlds follows Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and the crew of the starship USS Enterprise as they boldly go where no one has gone before. With nods to the earlier series’ episodic storytelling, narration and designs, Strange New Worlds brings a contemporary take to much-loved territory.

Prime Video

Outer Range (2022—)

For trippy sci-fi that asks you to turn on your wild theory generator, look no further than The sci-fi Western is set on the Abbott family ranch, where patriarch Royal (Josh Brolin) hides an almighty secret. When a stranger comes to town (Imogen Poots), he’s forced to confront his past, present and future, and not just in the metaphorical sense. Weird in ways you won’t expect, Outer Range is a solid sci-fi outing worth sticking with.

EPIX

From (2022—)

This sci-fi horror centers on a small town plagued by mysterious and terrifying occurrences. When a family become lost, they’re sucked into a nightmare involving deadly creatures and equally deadly townspeople. With enough intrigue to keep you hooked and a strong protagonist in Harold Perrineau’s Sheriff Stevens, From is an engaging destination to spend time in.

Showtime/YouTube/Screenshot

The Man Who Fell to Earth (2022—)

This series, based on the Walter Tevis novel, features a stunning cast: Chiwetel Ejiofor plays an alien who lands on Earth in search of help from a brilliant scientist and Bill Nighy plays Thomas Jerome Newton, an alien who fell to Earth in the 1976 movie adaptation. The role was originally played by David Bowie and each episode in this sequel to the movie is named after one of Bowie’s songs. A more than solid, entertaining series that’s best watched without comparing it to previous material. Although, if you’re not a fan of split timelines, beware.

Amazon Studios

The Expanse (2015-2022)

Amazon rescued The Expanse from the realm of canceled TV, bringing the series up to six seasons. Thank goodness it did, because The Expanse is smart sci-fi with realistic characters, high production values and a dash of detective noir. In a future where humanity has colonized the Solar System, a conspiracy threatens to start a cold war between the largest powers. A band of antiheroes find themselves at the center. Look forward to more space western themes in the consistently excellent later seasons.

MailOnline looks back at Big Brother's most iconic contestants

Reality television juggernaut Big Brother’s comeback has been confirmed by bosses, nearly five years after the show went on a hiatus.

The formerly Channel 5-based social experiment has found a new UK home on ITV2 and ITVX, with a series set to air next year.

Big Brother first aired on UK screens in 2000 when it launched on  and ran for a total of 11 series, while there were seven series of Celebrity Big Brother and a final special edition called Ultimate Big Brother.

It then moved to Channel 5 for a further eight series, with an additional 15 celebrity seasons, before going on hiatus in 2018 – after 18 years on screen.

It’s BACK!Big Brother’s much-anticipated comeback has been confirmed by ITV bosses – with the show set to move to ITV2/ITVX next year

One of the world’s most successful reality television franchises, it first hit screens in the in 1999 and more than 500 series of the show have aired around the world in more than 64 countries and regions.

And as it returns to UK screens, cast of carefully selected housemates from all walks of life will once again take up residence in Britain’s most famous television house for up to six weeks, with cameras capturing their every move.

It was reported a deal with rights-owner Banijay has been inked after months of talks and that the house will be in a brand new UK location, but it has been claimed former hosts Davina McCall and Emma Willis are unlikely to return.

Before its hiatus, the show featured some iconic moments over the years, and previous series have produced some of the most memorable moments of British television ever with housemates that live long in the memory.

After the news of Big Brother’s return, MailOnline takes a look back at some of the most iconic members of the public from the show…

Jade Goody – 2002/2007 series

Perhaps the most famous housemate, the late Jade Goody got her start as a contestant on the third series of Big Brother in 2002 alongside Alison Hammond, BBC radio host Adele Roberts and eventual winner Kate Lawler.

The series catapulted Jade to stardom with her exploits dotting the pages of tabloid newspapers before her return to the house in 2007 for Celebrity Big Brother (CBB) – alongside boyfriend Jack Tweed and mother Jackiey Budden.

The edition of CBB saw perhaps the most shocking series ever when Jade, along with model Danielle Lloyd and S Club star Jo O’Meara, were accused of racist abuse against Bollywood star Shilpa Shetty – culminating in distressing scenes.

Ofcom complaints flooded in from 45,000 viewers and the comments sparked a diplomatic incident when the UK and Indian governments got involved.Jade and Shilpa were then bizarrely placed into a head-to-head evictions vote where Jade was ousted from the house.

The incident led to CBB being cancelled in 2008. While Shilpa went on to win the show, Jade appeared on its Indian version a year later in an attempt to redeem herself. But while in the house, she was tragically told she had cervical cancer and left the house for treatment.

RIP: Jade died at the age of 27 in March 2009 following a battle with cervical cancer, just one-month after she tied the knot with Jack (both pictured in February 2009)

After the cancer spread and became terminal, Jade’s struggle led to a surge in requests for cervical cancer screenings and a national review in the policy for the disease.

Jade married Jack Tweed in February 2009 and sold the photo rights of the wedding to glossy magazines in order to provide a trust fund for her sons Bobby and Freddie.

Jade tragically died of cancer in March 2009 and her funeral led to a large public outpouring of grief from her admirers.

Alison Hammond – 2002 series

She’s earned legions of fans over the years, thanks to her upbeat antics on This Morning, where she has been seen interviewing some of the world’s biggest stars.

But Alison Hammond, 45, first made her TV debut on Big Brother in 2002 and she was evicted from the house after just two weeks.

The bubbly Brummie became the second housemate to be voted out of Big Brother’s third series.

Despite her rather modest stint in the house, she has fashioned a successful TV career out of her beginnings after she was hired as a reporter for ITV’s This Morning in 2003.

In recent years, she has become a firm social media favourite before eventually becoming a regular presenter on the chat show alongside Dermot O’Leary last year.

Hit: Alison Hammond was evicted from Big Brother just two weeks into her TV debut back in 2002

The Big Brother house is not the only reality show the national treasure has starred in as she went into the Australian jungle when she took part in the tenth series of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! in 2010.

She followed her time doing Bush Tucker Trials with subsequent spells on Celebrity MasterChef and Strictly Come Dancing in 2014.

Alison’s short spell in Big Brother was a shock to many of her newer fans when it was revisited in 2020 for the show’s 20th anniversary.

‘Alison Hammond becoming a British icon after only spending two on #BBUK,’ wrote one fan, followed by another who said: ‘I had no idea Alison Hammond got evicted so early. Now look at her. Proves you don’t need to win to do well in your career.’

‘How astounding is it that Alison Hammond got evicted after 2 weeks and is now one of the most recognisable faces on British TV,’ stated a third.

Nikki – who tragically died last year – was evicted on day 58, but went back into the house after the remaining contestants picked her to return.

After Big Brother, she bagged her own reality show, Princess Nikki, which saw her attempt to keep various jobs.

During her time on the house, Nikki formed an unlikely relationship with the show’s eventual winner Pete Bennett.Their romance ended a month after they left the house in 2006, but the duo remained close and caught up just a month before Nikki’s death.

Nikki had struggled with anorexia since she was a child and spoke frankly about time she had spent in institutions to treat her eating disorder both as a child and an adult.

Nikki’s death was confirmed online by her friend Leon Dee.

A statement on the GoFundMe page read: ‘It is with great sadness, we have to let you know that our dear friend Nikki passed away in the early hours of Friday 9th April.

Josie came up with the idea of Slimmables after helping a group of overweight people, called The Unslimmables, on The Alan Titchmarsh Show.

It took the Big Brother star two years to develop the website based on her own weight loss method.

The plan sees members go through a gruelling 14-day detox and then onto a 80/20 diet plan, where they can eat healthily 80 per cent of the time and have a 20 per cent ‘cheat’ leeway.
