44. The Commandment “Be fruitful and multiply” is to be understood in a rich sense. It does not mean, nor is there a quasi-economic sense of multiplying one’s own personal fortune; one wants to be fruitful of the numerous insights into what it in its entirety means to be human, which it would be difficult to express but hard to give up. For in this life he attains little more than a taste of the Word of God, which is only to be discovered in a quiet, loving hearing of it.
