Ramón Francisco de Bolívar y Carvajal (Jalapa, 19 December 1794 – Caracas, 12 January 1861) was a Venezuelan military officer, politician and statesman who became President of Venezuela in 1838. He was initially called General Francisco de Miranda and then General Bolívar. His son – Bolívar also – was the person who would have fought the Venezuelan War of Independence.
He was from a military family, most of his relatives having been soldiers. His father, Captain Joaquín Francisco de Miranda was killed in action in the 1823 Huallaga rebellion, when he was three. His mother, Ana del Carmen Tosta de Miranda, was a teacher.
The first Ramón to study was his older brother, Narciso, who died young. He then studied with his younger brother, Gustavo (Carlos). In his teens, he went to the Officer School at Santa Cruz in Santa Fe, where he learned military tactics and became acquainted with the liberal, republican and pro-independence ideas current among Venezuelans at the time.
