the mtv video music awards in 1995 were a watershed moment in the evolution of the music video, and grohl’s band was at the front of the charge with their ode to grunge, clueless, a dreamlike musical tale about a spoiled teen girl named chloe whose plans for the future are abruptly upended when her oblivious friends receive letters from the past and realize she had no idea about her fathers prizewinning musical award the previous night. despite its flaws, clueless is a genuine, affecting work that marked the first time most of grohls generation had seen him as anything other than a guitar-strumming 21-year-old. the film was the first to be co-directed by grohl, and contains the best performance of his career as well as his best-written role. but it was also the last the band would record, and it closed out the trilogy of idiosyncratic films grohl would make in the early 90s. after that, clueless became a footnote in the history of grunge.

a compilation of the best blur videos from the past 30 years is this film, which contains a digitally remastered and remixed version of the band’s best-known song. the video also includes “song 2” and “the universal”, two other tracks from their 2001 greatest hits collection, plus some b-sides and alternative videos, including their collaboration with damon albarn on “halo”.

the second film in the three-part reptilicus saga is a woeful attempt to continue the amazing first part while attempting to add new elements. its only negative aspect is the excessive use of the gore. its all very well done and there’s a few decent scenes but its not helped by being preceded by a far superior effort, nor is it helped by being preceded by the frankly tedious godzilla on planet earth.
its not one of the best movies ever and its probably the weakest of the bunch. the biggest problem is that its weak and shows its age. its a good idea but poorly executed. the special effects are not good, the story is weak and is further weakened by a weak story and weak characters. a film of its caliber should have succeeded better than this. if that is not enough, the special effects are not as good as they should be. the creature is not as scary as in the first movie.
the follow-up sequel to the fantastic the howling ii, this entry in the series is quite a letdown. the cast is an ill-matched mix of too many characters, which is never a good thing. the movie could have been the best howling out of the three (give or take a few wtf moments) but runs out of gas around the halfway mark. its also a bit low-budget and plays it way too safe from a monster perspective. enough said, its over before it gets going.
if i was a very horny woman i would see species 2 about 3 times. the special effects are very good. the monsters are well filmed. the character like is well cast. the story has a good twist at the end. i just wish the english was better.
