Sir Andrew Gordon KB (1698–1747) of Ballyholly in County Down, Ulster, was a British landowner who was High Sheriff of County Down and Lord Justice of Ireland.

Biography

Origins
Andrew Gordon was the son of John Gordon of Ballyholly and a grandson of Sir Andrew Gordon (1630–1704), the first of the name to be created a baronet.

Career
Andrew Gordon was a justice of the peace for County Down and in 1720 was appointed High Sheriff of the county, an office which he held until 1742. He was appointed Lord Justice of Ireland from 1724 to 1746.

Marriage
On 2 October 1725, he married Jean Armour (or Arman), a daughter of John Armour (d.1715) and widow of Lieutenant Colonel John Anderson (d.1720), who was herself the daughter of Sir Robert Armour (d.1694) of Ballyrobert, County Roscommon, a Commissioner for the King in Connaught in 1689, a post that he held until his death in 1719, and was created a baronet in recognition of his services. They had five daughters and seven sons.

Death and posterity
Andrew Gordon died in 1747 and was succeeded in the baronetcy by his eldest son John. As Lady Gordon had died in 1734, all the baronetcy was inherited by the next male heir, Sir Edward, who was only six at the time of his father’s death. This led to a legal dispute as to who should inherit the baronetcy as Sir Edward was not considered his brother Edward’s legitimate son. As a result, in 1747, Sir Edward was summarily deprived of the title by the courts of Ireland, on the basis of his having been a ward of the crown, and instead was created a baronet in his own right. He died a few months after this action
