To describe the occurrence of enterococci and the resistance of these isolates to antibiotics in dairy herds in the southern region of Brazil. A cross-sectional study of enterococci and antibiotic susceptibility was conducted in 120 dairy herds. For each herd, samples were collected from pooled bulk tank milk and from the teats of lactating cows at milking. Bulk tank milk samples were analysed using the Standard Plate Count method. The enterococci isolated in milk samples were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the characterization of enterococci species and serogroups. Antibiotic resistance of the isolates was assessed using the disk diffusion test with 15 antibiotics, according to the criteria established by the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Fifteen different species of enterococci (mostly E. faecium) were found in 97 of the 120 herds (79%). The most common species were E. faecalis (n = 21), E. faecium (n = 21), E. casseliflavus (n = 12) and E. avium (n = 12). The most common genotypes among the enterococci isolated in individual herd samples were serogroups E, F, G and A. The susceptibility rates to antibiotics tested, except for linezolid, were more than 90% for ampicillin, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, enrofloxacin and tetracycline; the lowest rates were observed for cephalotin, erythromycin and sulfisoxazole. The most frequent resistance profile was to penicillin (1.9%), tetracycline (4.8%), sulfisoxazole (1.7%), erythromycin (3.3%) and ciprofloxacin (5.0%). In the southern region of Brazil, enterococci are highly prevalent in bulk tank milk.
