Understanding layers

The original, unedited picture and the picture you want to use as the finished, printed image are stored in separate layers that are stored under the Images/Layers folder in the Photoshop folder. Layers are an important feature of Photoshop that enable you to save your work in a readable format.

Figure 1-1 shows the Layers palette, where you see the eight layers that comprise the Camera Raw 2.0 image file. (You can find a complete description of a layer in the sidebar “Understanding Layers,” earlier in this chapter.) In this figure, you see that the Black & White Adjustment Layer and the Gradient Map 1 are the only ones that have filled the layers; the Layers Palette is not showing the effect that the others have on the Layers. In the Layers palette, each layer is represented by a line in the Layers panel. (I talk more about layers and the Layers panel in the following sections.)

After you open an image in Photoshop and make any adjustments, you can turn on the Layers panel and see the original image and the adjustments on the different layers. By turning on Layers and opening or closing them, you see the results of the adjustments you made to the image. You can close the Layers panel to return to the picture.

Some people call the changes to the layers in an image layers and others call the parts of the image in which the layer changes are placed layers. In the following steps, I use the term layer.
