Persis Overture Score
Trivia PERSIS was born after the ideas and music of the Persis Overture, this film’s OVERTURE. The musical arrangements of Goldsmith’s PERSIS were created specifically for the film and were not used in any previous Star Trek movie.
PERSIS (Persis Khambatta) is the title character of the film, a Persian princess who hopes to marry the leader of the Persians, Lord Zar, who’s expected to follow the prophecy that his dynasty will rule over the Persian empire. This film opens with a message from Earth’s government that the Persians are planning to conquer the planet and starts by presenting a first-person account of the events leading to the rise of Persian King Darius. Zar is preparing for his reign while the Persians are preparing for war. Zar’s father (John Rubenstein) tells his son that his birthright will be a great good for mankind. With help from his friend and sparring partner Seleucus (played by the great actor Stacy Keach) Zar tricks and betrays the Persian’s elected leader, Xerxes I (Dwight Schultz), and is made Persian king.
With these portentous images the film takes us from the wild party to Xerxes’ first day on the throne. He is surrounded by enemies, including his brothers, the men surrounding him and his subjects. And then we cut to the next day with the arrival of the Persian army. The first person sequence is a clever bit of prequel storytelling and a great example of why this film was so successful at the box office and so highly regarded by the critics (the film earned Goldsmith an Oscar nomination for Best Original Score as well as a Golden Globe).
