sprinting through the city rooftops and dodging traffic are entirely new to rivals, but to many fans of the series it’s a welcome return to the route-jumping, hair-raising chaos of the first generation of need for speed. with over 40 different cars available to play, players can enjoy a mix of speed, style and creativity; from the super-charged powerbikes of street race and the all-electric ford gt (which is described as a “game changer” by cameron), to the stealthy abilities of the new sanus and the all-new c.e.p.s. squad.

it’s not a terribly significant problem, but it feels somewhat disconcerting to have to rely on a frame rate cap to gain a consistent 30fps when the scenes and surroundings look so good. the issue is somewhat mollified by the game’s ability to run in 60fps anyway, and while we’re not entirely sure what to make of this. we’ll certainly report back if the issue persists.

perhaps the issue with 30fps on the pc isn’t the engine itself but the operating system. since the pc does not have the latency-inducing overhead of the ps3, it makes sense that the game is running at 30fps, but it’s not the same case on the ps4. there, it’s natively running at 30fps like the xbox one.

All in all, Rivals looks great, sounds great, plays great – and runs brilliantly on both the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4. The series has migrated into one of the three leading brand-names in the genre of racing games, and is quickly becoming an essential component in the PC’s Modders toolbox. Update: Wow, that was quick. We’ve just had feedback to this article from Ghost Games’ Andreas Brinck, rendering lead on Need for Speed: Rivals – I wanted to thank you for the excellent technical analysis of our game, but also ask for a small correction. The article states that the PS4 version of the game is missing ambient occlusion, but the fact is that the PS4 version actually is using it in the form of HBAO. Here are two screenshots from the PS4 demonstrating the difference between having it enabled (this is what’s shipped and looking at the screenshots from the article it seems like this was in the build you played as well) and disabled. The effect is most visible on the exhaust pipes and the background, but can be seen on the armco as well.
