What is the best way to pick up the new position of the map after moving it?

I have a square map, in which there are various pieces. I would like to move the map, which means I must detect all the pieces’ position.
As I don’t have much experience in games programming, I am stuck on how to pick up the location of the map after moving it. For example, it is hard to know if the map is in the position (30, 30, 30).
What would be the best way to detect the new position of the map after moving it?

A:

One way that I have used in the past is by putting down a marker on the floor that is in the center of the piece, and then all of the other pieces are placed on top of this.
With the position of the map in mind, every time the piece gets changed, the position of the marker is set to the new position.
You then just have to check to see if there is any piece on top of the marker.
I did try this out by drawing a mesh on the piece to mark the location, but I found it more easily to have the marker on the floor.
