the stress histories show a single positive peak of stress in the first picoseconds following the shock. the peak stress in the first picoseconds is about 40% of the static yield stress of the material. the stress history in the first picoseconds can be thought of as being due to the sudden change of strain (the increase of distance between atoms) caused by the impulsive loading. the stress in the picoseconds following the peak is due to recovery of the strain in the material. the stress then declines very rapidly with time. the stress-strain history for the forward and backward directions are virtually identical until the wave reaches the top of the specimen. at this point, the strain in the forward and backward directions start to diverge. this is due to the dissipation of the wave energy in the material. the strain-rate history shows a peak of strain-rate at the time of the peak stress in the stress history.
in recent years, there has been a huge increase in the number of experimental studies on ultrasonic wave propagation in a variety of solids, in which the strain in the propagating wave has been measured directly by an interferometer and/or the stress in the propagating wave has been measured by the application of a known load to the other side of the propagating wave. consequently, a large body of experimental data has been collected on the speed and attenuation of the wave as a function of frequency, temperature, composition, temperature-composition and orientation dependence of the speed and attenuation, and so on. the purpose of this paper is to review some of these experiments, discuss the general implications of the data and draw some tentative conclusions about the future of this field.

Dude, I’m not one for naming products. I’ve had a hell of a time with the help of my friends figuring out what my toaster was. It was a huge job having to ask the people from the toaster store every day if this was in fact a “pop up toaster”. But I gotta give it to them they did sell it with a name. Here’s what we called it……It was called the “Pop out toaster”. It was designed as one product with two purposes. One to toast and one to pop out the bread. The problem was the toaster would have the bread go all the way into the toaster and the mechanism would have the problem of not being able to pull it out. We had a wonderful time trying to explain this to people as they would ask the staff what it does and they had no idea.
