On 7 October 2014, it was announced that the film will be produced by Emraan Hashmi’s production company, Black Sheep Pictures, and Bollywood composer duo Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, and that all the research initially undertaken at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad, will be an integral part of the story-line of the film. Valmiki was the chief lyricist, whilst fiction writing was done by Abhinav Verma. The part of Ramoji Film City is said to be recreated at a selected film city in India or abroad, and will be the opening title sequence of the film.[6]

Principal photography of the film took place from 3 October to 19 November 2014, in Kolkata, Chitpur, Kolkata and Rajgir, Naya Mukti near Aurangabad.[18][22] As the Kolkata Shareef are the main characters, most of the scenes are shot there. A portion was also filmed in Mumbai, as Kolkata is a happening city. According to Hashmi, most of the second half of the film will be shot in Cape Town, South Africa. Some of the movie is also shot in Chitpur of Kolkata.[23]

The theatres used to release Kahaani were theatres owned by Kolkata-based Gajendar Cinema, which would be giving the film the widest possible release. Hashmi said: “It is important to have wide release for landmark films such as Kahaani. So, we have chosen to see wide release. But the wide isn’t limited to just one city. It should be a wide release around the country..”. Hashmi’s next film is Rangoon (2016). The theatrical version will be released on 31 January 2015.[24]
