hi! you’re right, they do sell them in australia, i bought 2 of them off gumtree a while ago. i dont know why they dont have them online, but they do sell them through the main jmicron site. i believe they sold out in the uk too though, that’s where i bought them from. my bad for not knowing where they are in australia, i havent been there for a while so i didnt know.
i would have to say no. jmicron have a really good reputation for being reliable and the only issues i have had with them is that they are incredibly pricey, you will pay $50+ dollars for a 1gb chip (which is more than you should need) plus the other components are pretty expensive too. they are good for prototyping/hobbyist use but they are way too expensive for a pi zero.
hmmm, good question. i would like to say no but, that would be false. i would say that you could do it but it will require some very technical knowledge. look into some sort of fpga and you can build your own custom firmware. this will mean a lot of work, i dont know if it is worth it for a pi zero but it is worth it for a pi 3/4.
i know that this is what you have been looking for, but i don’t think that it is possible. i don’t know if they actually tested the jmicron’s and if they fixed the issues. but, i believe that the only way to brick a board would be to use a firmware that was non-supported.
we can use a tool like the fpga firmware update tool to download the firmware for the jms583 controller to the usb drive or hdd. all fpga based products have the same software from what ive seen. you can find it here. for a sata device we would have to make sure that the sata port on the pcie gen3x2 bridge controller is connected to a sata drive or adapter.
this is the first enclosure we have attempted to flash firmware on with success. the steps required to get the device to flash the firmware should be the same for all jms583 devices. this includes the m2x enclosure that we reviewed and the jms583 enclosure that we reviewed earlier this year. the first thing you will need to do is to get the firmware files that we have updated for you. we have posted all of the firmware update files to our m2x enclosure page. the firmware files can be found in the folder labeled “uasp/firmware/”.
after downloading the firmware update files, you can update the firmware on the m2x enclosure by connecting the enclosure to your computer and using an sd card reader. once the enclosure is connected, you will need to insert a blank sd card into the card reader. the m2x enclosure will prompt you to connect it to a power source and then you will need to manually mount the sd card. after you have mounted the sd card, you will need to update the firmware on the m2x enclosure. in our case, we will use the following commands on the command line to update the firmware:
first, you will need to execute the command “sudo uaspmk on”. this will show the current status of the firmware on the m2x enclosure. we will see that the firmware is at version 3.0.3. if you are seeing a newer version, you will need to update the firmware on the enclosure. we will now execute the command “uaspmk update” to update the firmware on the m2x enclosure.
after the firmware is updated, you will need to execute the command “sudo uaspmk update” again. you should now see that the firmware is at version 3.0.3. if you are not seeing a version newer than 3.3, you can try updating the firmware again.
