They’re still around, lurking between the lines, dressed in gasmasks and weapons. They’ve coopted two and a half centuries worth of literary history, but they are our default image of terrorists. They are the universalists, clutching their Kalashnikovs, acting out some twisted version of Homer’s Iliad.
But their insouciant look has at least one flaw. Their uniform is a photoshopped version of the one they wear in real life. When the two al-Qaeda planners who brought down the World Trade Center and Pentagon warned that “crusaders do not tire,” they were resorting to a well-established simile. They attributed their implacability to the idea that Western tolerance of their actions was founded on ignorance, on the belief that the West had no reason to avoid self-destruction.
This would be a more convincing story if the villains had read history. The Western peoples were not as ignorant as the terrorists imagined: They had been educated about the fragility of the West’s position in the world. Muslim students in London had been warned about Western perfidy in Gunpowder, Treason and Plot; Muslim audiences in Amsterdam cheered the destruction of the Banda Biju, the Dutch warship that had destroyed the Ottoman fleet in 1622.
The West had no need to destroy itself. Instead, it learned self-control. In England, the first parliamentary debate on the issue of Indian independence sparked a redirection of national strategy. Indians were no longer seen as competitors for economic, territorial and diplomatic control of the world; they were allies. Separatists in the US East learned the same lesson a generation later, when isolation led to distraction. But those lessons were not always accurately conveyed by educational systems that concentrated on canons of official history.
By telling the Middle Eastern terrorists to “update their hit lists,” the author makes the same mistake. The West’s history with Muslims is one of conquest and conquest in the name of a universal civilization. While the West continued to conquer — right up to US intervention — on the Arabian peninsula and in Southeast Asia, it also dedicated cultural resources to an idea.
