The Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas console release was held on September 17, 2005, at the New York City Hilton & Towers in the presence of media, show attendees, retailer representatives, video game developers, and members of the press.
According to a report by Eurogamer, the PlayStation 3 version of the game sold 16 million copies worldwide by March 2008, while the Xbox 360 version had sold 5 million copies globally by the end of 2007. In the US, the PlayStation 3 version shipped 2.3 million units in 2005, with 360 version being estimated to have shipped 2.1 million units by the end of 2007.
Game site TheJournal.ie announced that the game has seen as many as 1.6 million downloadable downloads on its site.
Reception
Critical reception was positive. The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions were met with universal acclaim. GameRankings and Metacritic assigned both games scores of 96% and 93 out of 100 for the PS3 version and 94% and 94 out of 100 for the Xbox 360 version, respectively. GameSpot awarded the PS3 version a score of 9.5/10, praising the game’s overall depth and depth of detail in the San Andreas setting, calling it “one of the greatest open world games ever created” and “a great successor to San Andreas”. The reviewer also noted that the game would appeal more to gamers who hadn’t played Grand Theft Auto before, and that it was “much closer to true San Andreas than Grand Theft Auto III” and “another must-have for any gamer with a head for cars”. 1UP.com gave it a 9.3/10 score and praised the game’s graphics, storyline and gameplay. IGN and GameSpy also scored it 9.5, with the former focusing on the gameplay and the latter on the graphics and presentation. Game Informer gave it a score of 9.5/10, the highest ever given by the magazine, praising the game’s freedom, depth and variety of missions, storyline and graphics. GameTrailers awarded the game 8.2 out of 10, praising the overall depth of the game, the character models and the storyline. GameSpot also awarded it the same score, praising the game’s story and gameplay. The editors of GameSpot and 1UP.com both called the game the best game of 2005. GtaSaSav2 contains all missions that the player has completed and has a value of $67,263,270. And Title.GtaSaSav contains all missions that the player has completed and has a value of $85,566,719.
