for example, in the context of climate change, the paper by nordhaus and boyer that steve mentioned (which i co-authored with my berkeley colleague, robert kaufmann) was also reviewed by david nordhaus and steven glaeser. david and steven are economists, not climatologists, but they are also extremely well known in the economics literature and they are often cited in the climate change literature. so, the paper by david and steven has a track record of getting attention in the economics literature.
so, the papers are getting attention but how do they get cited? what this tells us is that the papers are not cited because they’re not in climatology or economics. they’re cited because they’re in the right place at the right time.
the application of economics to the climate change problem is something we are doing, and it is not just about getting rich people and poor people to do something about climate change. it is about showing the world that economics is about helping people.
in one of the most important articles of the last five years, i argue that the economics of climate change will be the economics of energy. climate change is the economics of energy, we have to change how we think about the problem.
i am not trying to say we should do nothing. i am saying that the economics of climate change is the economics of energy. we need to change how we think about the problem, and to start thinking about it from a different perspective.
