Women in Office: WOW! Is it Hot in Here or Am I Having a Heart Attack?

I was reading an article about women in business and found myself wondering what it was like for the ladies to experience this double standard. I tend to see it play out in the local scene when it comes to music events. A local band starts out with two women in it and eventually one leaves while the other remains. Yes, this happens, but I really don’t think it happens more often that would make it a double standard.

Here’s a debate I would like to see: Is it still possible for me to call myself a feminist if I believe there is a double standard when it comes to gender? Do we all have to say that we are all equal to each other to make the society we live in, a just one?

I have had some conversations with my son about these kinds of issues. And what I hear from him is that he likes the idea of having women being leaders and that both boys and girls can want to do things that are not stereotypical. He likes the idea of being free to ask anyone he wants to be his date for the prom. That, of course, is what we are talking about here, if that is a double standard then I don’t feel we have a double standard.

I think what that means is that I do not think we should live in a world where the gender roles we have are thrown out the window. I do not want to live in that world. I prefer the world where gender is separated, and the current gender roles allow us to live in a world where the majority of people benefit.

I believe that the majority of people are intelligent enough to look at a situation and see the advantages and disadvantages to both genders. For women to be in positions of power is not something I think we should run from.

Let me explain this with an example: a guy I went to school with was crying about his grades. He was not a bad student. We used to joke about his situation. One day I asked him to explain it to me. He said that the day he got his letter he cried. He wanted a girl to get the letter, but it was too soon, he thought, for it to be a girl’s turn. He did not take the test because the test was not fair to men. He was very bitter about the system.
