History of Bluetooth Programming

In December 1994, Bluetooth was designed and developed by Ericsson at Ericsson R&D in Cambridge, UK. Later that year, in January, Ericsson founded the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG).

The whole idea of the Bluetooth protocol was to interconnect many different kinds of devices and allow them to communicate with each other using low power, short range, wireless technologies.

To make such a connection, the Bluetooth devices have to first discover one another. This process is done via Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connection. Once discovered, the devices can be paired together and the data is exchanged between the two devices.

Also, it must be mentioned that Bluetooth technology has also some similarities with the IrDA.

Basics of Bluetooth Protocol

The Bluetooth protocol is designed in two main parts – the low level and the high level.

The low level is responsible for the wire protocol of the Bluetooth. It includes the Bluetooth Physical layer (the lower link between the devices), the Bluetooth Logical Link Control and Adaptation Layer (LLCAP) protocol (is a proprietary protocol to define the information on Bluetooth devices, links, etc. and to coordinate the connection of the devices), and Bluetooth Service Discovery Protocol.

On the other hand, the high level is responsible for the logical protocol of Bluetooth. It includes the Bluetooth Core (upper link between the devices), Bluetooth Device Service Access Layer (BDSA) protocol (is a proprietary protocol for the Bluetooth devices) and Bluetooth Network Access (BTNA) protocol.

Bluetooth Protocol Features

The Bluetooth protocol is capable of connecting a maximum of seven devices together, but each device can be connected to the others at the same time.

The maximum wireless communication speed is 1Mbps (1.2Mbps using 802.11g). It is meant to serve as a replacement of the WLAN for short range wireless connectivity.

Bluetooth uses radio frequency (RF) (402MHz to 2.4GHz) to send data. It is meant to provide a safe, quick and low energy communication protocol that can be used in several wireless applications.

It is also a replacement of the IrDA technology in low-power, short-range, wireless networking.
