US forces have killed a “senior” member of the Taliban who was in the “direct vicinity” of an attack on a southern Afghan military base, the Pentagon said Sunday.
The self-proclaimed Islamic State group has also claimed responsibility for the attack, which saw at least 40 wounded when a car bomb exploded near Afghan forces in the provincial capital of Helmand, security officials said.
The Taliban also seized control of parts of the capital of the southern province of Kandahar overnight.
The US embassy in Kabul released a statement saying that one US service member was killed “in the direct vicinity of an attack on a military base in the province of Helmand on Saturday, March 19”.
“Troops were able to immediately secure the area and rescue all other personnel,” the embassy said.
Elsewhere in Afghanistan, there was a “significant exchange of gunfire” between US and Afghan forces “in Marjah, Helmand Province”, according to the Pentagon statement.
“Afghan forces responded and are currently in the area,” it said.
The statement added that “all Taliban attackers were killed and two devices were detonated”.
“Afghan forces will continue to defend the Afghan people against all threats.”
There were no further details of the incident.
The attack in Helmand, the most violent province in the country, came hours after the US military said that it had killed the Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour — the top commander of the insurgency — in a drone strike in Pakistan.
Mansour had taken over following the death of Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States.
He assumed the command when Mullah Mohammed Omar died in 2013.
