Dick the doc: a movie that comes along every few years, this one is on life, death and what it really means to be human, in a strange way that is likely to be familiar to anyone who has ever been.
In the beginning, humanity will settle upon a variety of lifeforms, and as the mammals learn to take care of each other, the human gets more curious, and starts traveling further and further away from home. There are generations of short-distance, if sometimes dangerous journeys, until the humans begin to explore life beyond the solar system.
I saw the original 2000 documentary in theatres (don’t know if it ever got released on DVD, however), and while I felt it was a welcome respite from the sheer ocean of ‘war films’ that came out at the time, there were a lot of questions that were never really answered.
What this film gives us is more curiosity, more questions about what is real, why does this have to happen? Maybe people will be a little more polite on our planetary journey, and take a little more care, but we’ve seen time and again that people don’t change by much until they are faced with the prospect of extinction.
Why don’t animals do this? I mean, they’ve been about for several billion years and have never really discovered tools, so why can’t they communicate, establish some kind of civilization? Why should we be the only ones in the universe capable of it? (The ones who are able to travel between solar systems, that is.) What about the insects? They seem to have a large number of specialized niches in nature (except for the bees, which seem to have gone down the wrong path somehow.) They even have distinct sexes and yet are able to procreate. What’s up with that?
Why must we always be the most ‘advanced’ species? The fact that we have to constantly invent tools to make our lives better and more interesting is an amazing thing to me. The world can get a bit boring, myself included, if we were always on the top of the food chain, never having to worry about starvation or survival. It can be far more enjoyable to sit around a campfire with a nice cup of tea, and get to meet the people around you.
