Cod 1 Patch 1.4 Crack

by limiting the slope of the load-cod1 profile, it is easier to identify the onset of stable crack growth. at higher loads, as the cod1 value declines, it is often possible to identify the point when the crack began to penetrate the interior of the sample, and the initial crack path and size were then observed. this is shown by the profile in fig. 14 for sample 30 at 0.0254mm/s loading. in this case, the cod1 value is constant through the initial unstable crack growth, but then begins to decline and ultimately drops to a constant value of 0.37 as the crack penetrates the interior of the sample.

this kind of information is not available from the load-cod1 profiles generated at the slower rate of 25.4mm/s. in general, the load-cod1 profiles at the slower loading rate only show a sudden drop in the cod1 value as the crack starts to penetrate the interior of the sample, as seen in the profile in fig. 15. in this example, the crack penetration begins at a load of 2.51 kn and the cod1 value drops to 0.46 (0.41-0.57), then remains constant for the rest of the load-cod1 profile. the constant cod1 value after stable crack growth indicates that the crack has penetrated the interior of the sample. the lack of any subsequent drop in the cod1 value indicates that the crack is then fully penetrating the interior of the sample.

the load-cod1 profile for sample 30 at 25.4mm/s loading rate is shown in fig. 16. the crack penetration begins at a load of 2.56 kn and a cod1 value of 0.35 (0.25-0.40), then the cod1 value continues to decrease as the crack continues to penetrate the interior of the sample. the last value recorded for the load-cod1 profile of sample 30 at 25.4mm/s is 0.37, which corresponds to the last recorded cod1 value in fig. 14. as seen in fig. 14 and fig. 16, the drop in the cod1 value is the same for both 0.0254mm/s and 25.4mm/s loads, but the load-cod1 profile for the slower loading rate shows a second step-down in the cod1 value after crack initiation, which is not seen in the 0.0254mm/s load profile. this indicates that the crack is able to penetrate the interior of the sample at the 0.0254mm/s rate, but not at the 25.4mm/s rate.
