in addition to the apps capabilities, the gns530/430 come with a large library of 3d objects to help the pilot understand the environment. although the 3d objects are not as detailed as the “real” ones, they do offer a quick way to orient the unit in the sky. whether or not you use the 3d objects on the unit is up to you, but for me, having the 3d objects on the unit is invaluable. in addition, rxp is also adding object and weather data in the next version of the trainer.

rxp has made substantial progress in the last couple of years in not only updating the software to be current, but improving the quality of the product and their customer service. this version of the trainer comes with an added benefit of updated weather data. the original trainer came with wind shear and wind gusts data which was not very accurate. the data in this version is a bit better, but it still is not as accurate as the real units. the other improvements to the program is the addition of the ryan 300 tcad. this adds authentic simulated terrain data that is used by many people for practice and general orientation, and helps the pilots to find more familiar environments.

the latest version of the trainer is a bit more than just a new version, it has been reworked to work with the new realityxp version. this version will be a bit more stable than the previous version. in addition, you will find that this version is much easier to use. when you enter the initial setup, you are asked if you want to include the preloaded maps. if you do not, the maps will be downloaded when you start the application. this is great because the maps for the area that you are flying in are included. however, the maps are not complete and they are not as good as the “real” ones.

my personal opinion is: there is no such thing as the most widely supported trainer os. there is only the officially supported trainer os by the manufacturer. the trainers that have a trainer os with more features, and which use less resources to run are better. for example, for the same price, you can buy a win7 laptop, which you can easily update with the latest version of the os, and which can be used by many pc users, as opposed to buy the printer first, then get the software.
i got a garmin 520 2002 version of the g530 trainer for sale on ebay, and it doesn’t have anymore the menu that i miss to use, and updates are really easy by just plug in a usb memory and the new file will download, and you got your udpates immediatly. you just have to follow the instructions by searching your pc for the zip file.
and with this, the advantage of using that trainer is also that you can access the software of the trainer without the need to install it, and updates are automatic, and the result is just as good as an official trainer.
