if youre curious about the latin american version of calibri, just open a document in your favorite font and use find & replace to find and replace the lowercase t with the new one. (the uppercase t should be left alone, as it is essentially the same as the original calibri.)

once youve set the styles for your heading and body text, you can create styles for things like paragraph spacing and alignment, font sizes, bullets, and so on. for example, you could use the heading styles to make your paragraphs look like this:

see what i mean about that being a useful, flexible, and engaging design? it can be used on any computer running windows, but it can also be used in combination with custom styles on a latin american computer and would look just fine.

the point is that using simple paragraph styles like this makes it easy to integrate a design into your documents without having to create a new font. if youre looking for more information on creating your own styles, a very good tutorial is available at the microsoft website.

so, i decided to look at the set of two sans serifs designed for body text: the new (or, “reinvented”) calibri, and the new (or, “reinvented”) cambria. both are designed to have a wider and lower x-height than din, and both are designed for long text. calibri is lighter and more structured, and cambria is a bit more nimble and playful.

skeena has a wide x-height and a low-contrast stroke, a very strong identity for body text. if there’s a more formal style, the skeena typeface is it. the design’s rhythm and structure are more similar to comic sans than calibri or cambria. it’s easy to see why skeena is one of the most used typefaces in document designs.

other fonts may have more or less of this; the letters in this font may be either a single stroke or a “double stroke”, but the points are all the same, while the width is slightly greater at the top than at the bottom.
the body text in a real-life typographic project might vary in width and height, depending on the type of paper, the position of the type, and the content. such variations can cause a mismatch between the design of a typeface and its presentation on a particular page, or even on a single line of text.
a serif is any typeface with a “point” at the end of each line of text, as opposed to a sans-serif, which has no such points. the most common serifs are what we refer to as “brick wall” or “classical” serifs, while the most common sans serifs are what are called “geometric”, meaning they have little to no structure at the end of the lines, like the georgia family of fonts. this is why the serifs in “eraldine” look much bolder and more regular than the sans-serifs.
what i found with the latin american version of calibri was that while the x-height was generally fine, it came in at a point where the x-height of the uppercase t in the first row of the lowercase t didn’t seem right. by increasing the width of the t from 5 units to 5.5 units, this was resolved.
it doesn’t have any more weight or feel than the original design, so i could just use the original grandview font on my computer and use the latin american one on the latin american computers. i think its also worth noting that the latin american version of calibri is a custom font, so it would not work as a replacement for the original grandview font, which is a downloadable.ttf file from microsofts website. at least, i dont think it would because the latin american version of calibri is distributed as a custom font file, while the original is distributed as a.ttf file.
