Battle of Fleurus

The Battle of Fleurus (May 13, 1794) saw the victorious Austrian army defeat the French under General Moreau. After successfully renewing their control over the Rhine, the Austrians wanted to distance themselves from French ambitions in the Austrian Netherlands, which threatened Austria’s control over the German territories.

The Battle of Fleurus is an example of the successful use of artillery; the artillery drove the French under Moreau from their fortress-based positions, and a victory soon followed.

Battle

In the spring of 1794, the French army fought the Austrians under Marshal Joerg Löwenstein in what was later called the “Battle of Fleurus”. Moreau reconnoitred the Austrian army, deployed to the northeast of the town of Fleurus (now in Belgium). He realized that the Austrians were inadequately drilled and armed, and one of his objectives was to transform the Austrian army into a modern, well-trained, and respected force, to replace the French army as an ally of the Austrians

The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The goal of this project is to determine the physiological role of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) by directly targeting FGF21 signaling in the liver. FGF21 was initially discovered in mice as a fasting-induced endocrine hormone that exerts potent metabolic effects on non-pancreatic tissues. In human, FGF21 is elevated in patients with diabetes mellitus, but its physiological role has not been fully elucidated. By targeting FGF21 signaling in the liver, we have shown that hepatocyte-specific FGF21 ablation in mice results in fat accumulation and insulin resistance, which is associated with increased inflammation and endoplasmic reticulum stress, but reduced oxidative stress. Our preliminary study has suggested that FGF21 exerts insulin-independent glucose-lowering effect in mice with mild obesity. Based on these observations, we hypothesize that FGF21 can be developed as a novel therapeutic agent for the treatment of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. To test this hypothesis, we will pursue two specific aims: 1) to determine the physiological role of FGF21 signaling in the liver;and 2) to examine the feasibility of a liver-targeted approach of FGF21
