BeamBoy is a light-weight, intuitive and easy to use Windows application that provides engineering students and professionals with a simple and reliable means of calculating the stability of a prismatic beam or shaft when applying various loadings, such as loads, point and distributed loads as well as moments.
Let’s Start!
You can easily find a lot of information on the internet regarding beam and shaft stability, but just a small amount of them give you the correct parameters to use in the application you have in your hand. In the ‘Help’ menu, there is a variety of downloads related to beam and shaft stability, both in pdf and 3D formats. Amongst other things, there is a list of all the material parameters needed to perform the calculations, as well as a full description of how to use the software.
The main window is divided into two tabs: ‘Beam Data’ and ‘Solution’. The first will provide you with an overview of the different results displayed for each solved case, or in other words the different beam characteristics. In the latter tab, your results will be shown, and you can freely zoom into the visualization window. To the right of the visualization window, you can edit or alter a calculation in real time.
For the sake of clarity, in this application, the processes of determining beam stability and calculating the result when stability criteria have been met, are considered separately. I’m actually working on a specification for a Cat5E cable enclosure that I want to design, but I can’t for the life of me get it to calculate the moment and deflection of a prismatic beam. I’ve saved the location, length and type of support points (off a RWAL) and tried to get it to calculate this for me and it wont work.

When I press the calculate button in the GUI it says ‘Calculating’ for a few seconds and then ‘error’. The activity does not go away when you hit the restart button either. Any help would be very much appreciated.
