its not until she makes a call that really matters, though. part one ends with a shot of adama on the phone, and it shows him hes just been told that his son, boomer, has been shot down. and that, to borrow a line from razor, is “the day that changed everything.” he orders the surviving crew of pegasus to get into their fighter jets, and because the cylons are hitting them from all sides, they jump away. this is the big, dramatic moment of the episode, and its the moment where the viewer sees the characters reacting to the situation. all hell breaks loose. its a good moment that shows the humanity of the characters, but it doesnt really build on that until the final moments of part two. and thats when it reveals that the admiral is in fact not the same person she was before. the admiral is no longer the feared warrior leader, but rather a broken woman who has lost it all. its a painful moment to watch, and it could have been expanded out even more, but thats what makes razor so great. its the way it manages to tell a bsg story in a format thats not the series own, and it does it with plenty of heart, style and grit.

the other aspect of razor that makes it so special is that it gives us a few glimpses into the troubled history of the show. its not unlike other series that have had multiple re-makeings. there was galactica 1980, for example, which takes place a couple years before the events of the original bsg. then there was the theatrical feature, razor, which takes place ten months earlier. but these two changes werent really a reboot of the series, and they weren’t even big changes to the series. they were just tiny, clever ways of telling the same story. razor is different in that it takes place during a different time period, but it was still the same story. the biggest difference is that part one takes place in the second season, which is where razor originally aired. that gives it a different vibe than most bsg episodes and it lets it feel like a whole other story. it’s the first time we really get to see adama as a leader. a show that was built on a concept of leadership, and so it felt natural to have the admiral make the hardest call of her life. and its a good call. it really works, and its a pity that razor had to be an unrated extended version, because it could have been better.
