The US sent a small contingent of advisors to Vietnam to train the South Vietnamese army in 1965. This operation initially consisted of a helicopter airlift of about 3500 soldiers and about 1100 civilian advisors. By 1967, nearly 16,000 US personnel had been sent to Vietnam, and by the end of 1972 the number had increased to over 500,000. The political divisions between the US leadership and the Vietnam government became increasingly sharp. In 1969, as the political situation in the United States worsened, President Johnson sent an additional 16,000 troops to support the South Vietnamese. The ceasefire is breached by Viet Cong guerrillas and by North Vietnamese Army units. The United States continued to pursue an allied response in which the US would supply military aid to South Vietnam. This increasingly antagonized Hanoi, and the US found it increasingly difficult to supply the South Vietnamese with munitions and spare parts in order to keep up their fighting force. Increasingly, Hanoi distanced itself from the Provisional Revolutionary Government of South Vietnam and its Supreme Military Council, and they gained support from many of the factions fighting in Vietnam. In 1971, the US decided to withdraw all remaining troops and then to destroy the Hanoi regime. That would then allow the government of South Vietnam to come to power and to establish an independent Vietnam. This stepped up pressure on the US and the North Vietnamese and both sides stepped up their strategic and tactical preparations. The United States withdrew all of its forces from Vietnam on 15 April 1973, leaving behind an occupying force of some 34,000 to 70,000 US troops.
