the trailer claims that the extended cut is the definitive version. i don’t believe that. i think that the theatrical cut is probably the definitive version. this new version is really something of a combination of the two. in fact, the early reviews don’t mention any of the substantial changes. a lot of them are rather jarring, and a lot of them are not very effective. (i thought that the addition of the cattle and the dead na’vi were horrible and out of place, and the little girl was just stupid. the new scenes with jake and neytiri were generic and poorly executed. the extended sex scenes are a bit too graphic. i think that the new bits in the final third of the movie were probably the worst part of the new edition, and if they were so bad, why bother? this version doesn’t seem to be worth the investment. i think that we’ll be getting a 3d version of this release, too. i can’t imagine that people will rush out to buy it.
as i said, the blu-ray release is the same as the original dvd, except that the blu-ray has a newer transfer. it’s no longer possible to blame the 7.1 dts-hd master audio track for the lack of features. as noted in the blu-ray disc features, avatar was originally released with two featurettes on the dvd, featuring clips from the original theatrical release: [5]
for the blu-ray release, james cameron and 20th century fox had the opportunity to add even more. as i noted in my review of the extended collector’s edition, the new disc includes a third featurette on the disc: [6]
so, the main selling point of the movie is the amazing cgi. the film’s creators really stepped up their game with this movie. the landscapes are stunning and the motion capture work is phenomenal. some of the visual effects are too big, and look awkward when viewed up-close. (particularly the beach city on pandora.) certain effects like the ice-covered canyons are executed much more impressively than others. the only visual effects that i found lacking were the fire-sculpture-like structures that glow in the night skies of pandora. the creatures within are really cool, but are sometimes poorly matched to the visuals. the first two hours of the movie feature very few creature shots, and a good percentage of the climax is spent on jake and his friends having to battle the imposing navi. the fact that one of the navi is played by winona ryder is just icing on the cake. so, i think that cameron should be applauded for trying to bring new life to the ‘avatar’ franchise. it didn’t work. the film’s sequel, pandora, is a complete disaster. but, at least he gave it a shot. i’m always on the lookout for a good live-action adaptation of an animated classic, and i really don’t know of any that i enjoy. ‘avatar’ was one of the first. i hope i’m proven wrong. at any rate, i’d encourage you to see the movie for what it is and not what it should be. what it is: a mediocre effort by a director that should have known better. what it should be: a movie that shows a lot of promise and a director who should know better. in other words, you’re watching a movie that will either suck your time and money, or it will keep you glued to your screen long after the credits roll.
