History of AutoCAD

AutoCAD was first developed by Douglas Mcllwain in 1981, at McGraw-Hill in Palo Alto, California, on the Parc 700 series personal computers. The developer of AutoCAD went on to found the company with his wife Elizabeth McAlister and some employees in 1982. At the time, Ms. McAlister, along with the company founders, had all gone to the university of California at Berkeley to study computer science.

The first version of AutoCAD was released in December 1982, and it was not initially intended for retail. It was the first, and still the only, desktop CAD program available on the personal computer market at the time.

In November 1985, a release was made for the Apple Macintosh, making AutoCAD available for desktop and embedded use. AutoCAD was the first Autodesk product to support Mac OS. This version of AutoCAD for the Apple Macintosh was a great commercial success, and spawned an industry of new versions and extensions for AutoCAD, such as the Windows-based versions of AutoCAD (noted below), and drawing features and enhancements like multiuser drawing and annotation capabilities, property palette, and complex filter tools.

Also in 1985, Autodesk launched the DrawMaker program, which was a bitmap graphics editor that also served as an extension of AutoCAD. This was the first Autodesk product to use the term “AutoCAD”. DrawMaker was a four-button mouse application that allowed users to draw bitmaps using various tools and control objects, such as lines, rectangles, and ellipses.
