What is AutoCAD used for?

AutoCAD is similar to another 2D CAD program: VectorWorks. VectorWorks is a desktop app that runs on Apple, Microsoft, and Linux platforms, and a standalone app that runs on the Microsoft Windows platform.
AutoCAD is different from these desktop 2D CAD programs in a number of ways:
Unlike VectorWorks, AutoCAD does not use “vector” graphics to draw. Instead, AutoCAD draws straight, flat lines called “linestrings” or “polylines” (with straight edges).
AutoCAD’s “styling” is simpler than that of VectorWorks. VectorWorks features lots of options and settings to control the style and appearance of 2D drawings, whereas AutoCAD does not. You can change the color and thickness of lines and curves in AutoCAD, but this is a complex process.

History
AutoCAD first appeared on the desktop in 1987 as AutoCAD I, followed by AutoCAD II in 1989.
Major new features
The most notable new feature in AutoCAD 2013 is the ability to create 2D and 3D models from images or 2D layouts, then convert them to geometry or surfaces.
AutoCAD 2013 (and AutoCAD LT) has a built-in 2D viewer that can display a number of views of 2D drawings. These views include top, side, cross section, exploded, and parts lists. 3D drawings can be viewed in 3D on a 2D screen.
Unlike previous releases, AutoCAD 2013 no longer includes “Planar” and “Model” menus.
User interface
Autodesk’s user interface design process was an extensive multi-year effort, beginning as early as 2002. This process was modeled after the entire suite of Autodesk products including the 3D product for architects, engineering and construction (AEC) professionals. This effort gave users the ability to work in an open environment where the product’s look and feel would be adapted to a specific application.
The most significant change to the user interface in AutoCAD 2013 is the removal of the toolbar, which replaced it with a “Drag and Drop” (D&D) functionality.
The D&D toolbars have been improved, and have a new look. They now use a “hot zone” icon to inform the user that they can place the tool in a particular workspace (context). The context of each workspace can be set in preferences. Also, the interfaces for non-customization files and object property windows now use a “push button” interface.
The interface was reworked in AutoCAD 2012. Many interface elements were simplified and redesigned, including the “Drag and Drop” interface to work better with the underlying new functionality. The interface also borrowed from the Visio interface.
The user interface was reworked again in AutoCAD 2014. In that release, AutoCAD 2013’s D&D toolbars were replaced with a new “context-aware” tool bar. The new D&D toolbars can be customized by users. A new “hot area” feature informs users that they can place the tool in a particular workspace.
