Autodesk Inc has launched a suite of design software products to promote the success of its AutoCAD product.
The move, coupled with a change in management that saw Autodesk CEO Carl Bass take over from founder John Walker, will put more pressure on rival software maker Bentley Systems as the CAD industry consolidates, analysts said.
Bentley Systems and Autodesk had long enjoyed a duopoly in the $70 billion CAD market.
Autodesk’s suite of products — including AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, Inventor and Carrara — will be marketed in a bid to make it easier for architects, engineers and other users to connect and use the applications on a single platform.
“The Autodesk of old was built on such a high level of user engagement that users have been a big part of its success. They’re trying to maintain that high level of engagement,” said analyst Roger Kay at Kay’s Survey Research.
“There are problems in the market that are being mitigated by products like these. One is that you can get small to medium sized companies, their budgets won’t allow them to buy the whole thing and hire a staff of AutoCAD engineers. They’re trying to provide software that they think is in that same range.”
While there are other CAD programs in the market, only Autodesk is regarded as a true flagship, he said.

The company has the CAD industry’s most valuable brand name, ranking above the likes of BASF and Johnson & Johnson.
AUTODESK, which employs 14,000 people worldwide, is one of the larger software companies by revenue at $3.7 billion, second only to competitor Autodesk in the U.S. and about a third of smaller rival Bentley Systems.
AUTODESK has outpaced its rivals in terms of revenue growth.
During the first quarter of 2013, revenue increased 8.6 percent at a time when sales of desktop CAD were flat and declined in a market segment that is expected to grow slightly in 2013, said GlobalData.

History
AutoCAD began as a project in the mid-1970s at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, where Burt List developed an application, called Graphic Designer, which allowed creating drawings interactively and submitting them to a printer. List later formed a company called Graphic Arts Computer System (GACS) with four other Los Alamos colleagues. GACS demonstrated Graphic Designer to VPL and in 1980 it became known as AutoCAD. The original AutoCAD was a relatively primitive program that could draw two-dimensional curves and 2D shapes. However, a year later a four-dimensional capability was added.
AutoCAD was originally a proprietary product, developed at GACS in Los Alamos, New Mexico, and sold to customers who had to pay a licensing fee for each copy sold. AutoCAD was the first such product to become a profitable company as a result of a major licensing change, brought about when Graphic Arts Computer System (GACS) was purchased by Autodesk in 1986. Since then, AutoCAD has been widely used by engineering and architecture students at the University of California, Berkeley to learn AutoCAD. Students would occasionally work on the Autodesk campus as part of a class project, until the university required all students to have a copy of AutoCAD on their personal laptop.
In 2006, Microsoft bought a 32 percent stake in Autodesk for $1.67 billion in cash and stock and from this point the software was only licensed to Autodesk customers. However, Autodesk subsequently made the AutoCAD software available for free to registered users.
In 2006, Autodesk introduced AutoCAD LT for use on the Mac OS, and this version was sold to users by third parties as well as by Autodesk. AutoCAD LT was not included in the original purchase by Microsoft. In 2011, the company discontinued the AutoCAD LT application and it was replaced by AutoCAD WS.
In August 2013, Autodesk released AutoCAD LT 2018 for the Mac, marking the first version of AutoCAD released for the Mac since 1999. In October 2013, Autodesk announced

Facebook is a social network and people use it for that purpose. When people are asked, “What do you use Facebook for?” they typically give a vague response such as “I’m just on Facebook.” Some people are on LinkedIn for professional reasons, and some people are on Google+. Some people use FaceTime to chat with their friends. I can’t give a very honest answer as to what I use Facebook for, because I use Facebook for so many different things, and it really depends on my mood. I use Facebook for news, entertainment, chatting, remembering old memories, family stuff, professional stuff, school stuff, politics, just keeping up with people, planning out my life, keeping up with my friends, connecting with old friends, and for other crazy reasons.
