History

AutoCAD was developed by Autodesk to compete with the widely used AutoCAD LT, which was released in 1981. The first version of AutoCAD ran on an Amiga with a custom-designed software architecture (the ‘Honeywell Architecture’). This was later ported to the Intel 80386 microprocessor, and in 1990s to IBM’s operating system-based personal computers with the Windows operating system.

Autodesk started as a company that designed graphics editors, creating 3D graphics software for its own brand of graphics workstations. AutoCAD was developed for these graphics editors, and as Autodesk made money developing CAD software for AutoCAD, AutoCAD became Autodesk’s main product.

As of 2019, all versions of AutoCAD are sold as subscriptions that are valid for lifetime use on a single PC.
