The present invention relates to fluid mechanics and, more particularly, to apparatus and methods for cooling thin-walled structures, such as turbine engine blades, from their operating temperatures.
Conventional turbine engines have bladed airfoils, such as the rotor blades and the stator vanes, that are exposed to high-temperature fluids in order to enhance their thermodynamic characteristics. As a result of being exposed to such high temperatures, the airfoils become thick-walled to withstand the heat without experiencing undesired deformations. The walls of conventional airfoils are typically thick enough to withstand the heat and are, therefore, relatively heavy. Because of the additional weight, conventional airfoils require an increased amount of fuel to move the gases over them, which, in turn, reduces the overall efficiency of the turbine engine.
It has been discovered that the use of thin-walled airfoils, such as the aforementioned airfoils having walls less than about 0.25 inches, reduces the overall weight of the airfoils and decreases the overall weight of the turbine engine. Thus, the use of thin-walled airfoils saves fuel and increases the overall efficiency of the turbine engine.
The inventors herein have recognized a disadvantage with the foregoing approach. Specifically, thin-walled airfoils tend to be more susceptible to heat transfer. As a result, thin-walled airfoils may experience undesired deformation at their inner and/or outer walls when exposed to high temperatures.
This problem is particularly noticeable with the airfoils of a turbine engine. When such airfoils are used in turbine engines, a hot stream of gases can flow past the airfoil. Because of the high temperatures, the outer portions of the airfoil expand, causing the walls to become larger. When the airfoils begin to expand, a portion of the wall experiences increased bending stress due to a corresponding increase in the moment arm. As such, the bending stress increases to such an extent that the outer wall may fail and thus cause the airfoil to enter a stall condition. Consequently, the outer walls of thin-walled airfoils may expand inwardly to the point of breaching and separating. Thus, thin-walled airfoils are preferably cooled in order to prevent such potential wall breaches.
