in kaalam, mt uses the theme of the injustice meted out to women in the name of marriage. the theme of marriage and arranged marriage is seen from a different perspective in this novel. the central character, manju (vimala), is a young girl born to a widow. because her father is an influential priest, she is brought up in luxury. she is married off to a man who is much older than her but whom she loves. her husband, however, is an alcoholic who abuses her and rapes her repeatedly. she marries a second time in order to save her child and leads a miserable life as a single mother. after her death, her grown up child meets with an accident and her son becomes mentally retarded. her daughter, in her search for the truth, comes to know of her mother’s true identity and its tragic impact on her life. the novel, like the earlier ones of the author, is concerned with the inequitable treatment of women, and their treatment as chattels by the system. it was mts most important contribution to the concept of the women’s movement in kerala.
randamoozham (the second turn) is another bold contribution of mt to malayalam literature. it narrates the mythological story of bhima, a brave warrior who was selected by his uncle to be the successor of his father’s throne. in a symbolic act, he kills his maternal uncle out of love for his mother and her family. as a result, he takes over the throne and is forced to fight with karna, the son of his sister-in-law. the novel is remarkable for its vivid poetic imagery, a quality that mt often employed to give life and colour to his works. mt has never been averse to experimenting with new forms and techniques. the novel is set in five different palaces and unfolds in a dramatic, unbroken flow. his most important novel is randamoozham, which redefines the concept of malayalam literature. his achievement in retelling the mahabharatha from the point of view of the hero bhima is highly laudable.
