As rock’s goodie-two-shoes for the ’90s, Aerosmith became a rather stale box-office ticket. By 1997, Tyler had already lost the band’s creative vigor and the album’s leadoff single, Devil’s Got My Love, became Aerosmith’s last Top Ten hit. The band’s first of three live albums, Get a Grip, followed their successful comeback, showing much the same work as their prior studio efforts, leaving fans unimpressed. 1999’s Sell This House furthered this process, as the lowest-selling and lowest-charting Aerosmith album to date.

A few years later the band had re-polished their classic chops, on tracks like the ode to their country influences, Madison Blues, which was included on 2002’s Just Push Play and 2005’s Honkin’ on Bobo . 2007’s Rocks featured the already underrated, Loose Change and 2009’s Music From Another Dimension: Greatest Hits Vol. 1 was a hit with the masses, with new songs live versions of Back in the Saddle Again (No. 8), Devil’s Got My Love (No. 9), Grow Another Beard (No. 10), and a hard rocking My Girl (No. 6) so it will probably be a hit.

Released in early 1977, the cover of the band’s second album Toys in the Attic is a bizarre, but awesome for the mid ’70s, artistic mix of pink glitter, cartoon-themed imagery, odd guitar effects, and, for the time, some innovative multi-layered sonic effects.

Released after the band’s massive commercial comeback, Toys in the Attic shares its title with the iconic Captain Marvel comic from 1939, and for its time, was innovative for many reasons. The lead single, Sweet Dreams, was the band’s first million-seller and helped propel the album up the charts. It’s an epic and bombastic piece, featuring what was then an experimental use of swirling guitars and other effects. Alan Meltzer, Aerosmith’s brilliant engineer at the time, went on to work with Led Zeppelin and many other bands, using similar effects on many of their albums. Guitarist Joe Perry would use the same effects on Aerosmith’s third album Rag Doll. The album was a success, helped in part by the single’s chorus, which was later covered by the Goo Goo Dolls.

Aside from 1996’s live set, recorded in Toronto in front of 35,000 fans, the group didn’t release another studio CD until 2006’s Honkin’ on Bobo. It was worth the wait. Aerosmith didn’t rush this one; they just went back to the basics and allowed the songs to shine by recording them as the group of friends and brothers that made them great. The results were stunning, with songs that still sound fresh (I’m Gonna Miss You, Holidays and Round Here) and that still pull punches (Pretty Fly for a White Guy and After the Storm) that make you look at the band askance and want to slap them when you think you’ve finally figured them out.
But the band are never a simple story. They’ve always been thorny people, with mood swings, all-out fits and prolonged battles for the spotlight. And they’re still, in 2018, fighting for artistic control and the right to make their own songs, and be-they’re artists and heirs to the legacy of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band to ever cross your paths. And although it’s almost been two years since the band’s breakthrough album and massive reunion, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention how Aerosmith are due to come back in one of rock history’s biggest stories: The inevitable, #1-charting, Billboard-certified comeback of their pioneering 1990s debut album Permanent Vacation. (That’s right, THE album that made the group superstars and sent the album charts into a tailspin, will make it back to the top of the pile.)
