ROME, Oct 18 (Reuters) – Italy’s government is working on the protection of civilians, on pressing humanitarian issues and on a “speedy solution” to the Israeli-Hamas conflict, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Wednesday.

In a statement, Meloni said she was “deeply saddened” by the Gaza hospital strike in which hundreds of people died, and said her government was waiting for final clarification on the dynamics of the shelling.

Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that controls Gaza, has blamed the blast on Israel. Israel says it was a result of a failed rocket launch by Palestinian Islamic Jihad, another militant group in the enclave. (Reporting by Alvise Armellini, editing by Cristina Carlevaro)
