The disulfide bond content in Golgi membrane proteins has been shown to be altered during several experimental conditions which produce alterations in cellular transport. This study was conducted to determine if ethanol, as is observed in vivo, affects the disulfide bond content of the Golgi membrane and if such an effect is related to altered Golgi function. The disulfide bond content of Golgi membranes isolated from the livers of ethanol-treated rats was determined by using a disulfide-bond-specific probe and compared with the content of Golgi membranes from control animals. The disulfide bond content of all rat liver Golgi membrane proteins is increased in ethanol-treated rats. However, the increase in disulfide bond content of a single Golgi membrane protein (Gal/Nac-BP) is specific to the ethanol treatment, since the disulfide bond content of this protein in control rats is the same as in animals receiving dextrose instead of ethanol. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that ethanol alters the normal disulfide bond content of Golgi membranes and that this is correlated with the dysfunction observed in vivo.Light scattering in the glaucoma diagnostic classification system.
The aim of this study was to measure the incident and backscattered optical signals of the cornea and aqueous humor in normal and glaucomatous eyes with the Glaucoma Diagnostic Classification System (GDC). The scattering in aqueous humor and cornea was studied in vivo by using a slit-lamp, which combines an optical biometer and a biomicroscope, with a He-Ne laser at 633 nm. The optical properties of the cornea, aqueous humor, and blood were determined in the wavelength range 400-900 nm. Aqueous humor scattering was best characterized by a Lorentz-Gauss function and showed the greatest difference in scattering power in normal and glaucomatous eyes.
