The US Army has been working with a local defense firm, Atlantic Armored Solutions, to develop a 7 ft van that can navigate the roads of Afghanistan with the upcoming armored vehicles being shipped to base. The company is already working with the new troop-bearing vehicles, and the van will also be in use.

“We’re talking about having a 7-foot van. And we’ve got a whole set of requirements as to where it needs to operate, what it has to be able to do and, basically, how it looks,” explained Atlantic’s Vice President Steve Armentrout.

“It will serve in an emergency support role, be able to navigate through the roadways we’ve got in the country, and also have enough space to carry one officer or a full set of equipment.”

Currently, the men on the ground in Afghanistan will be able to use the Hummers and MRAPs that the US Army has used for the past couple of decades, but Armentrout noted that the new troop-bearing vehicles arriving this year will be an improvement.

“The vehicles that we’re gonna get, the MRAPs and the Hummers, they’re brand new,” said Armentrout. “We’re gonna get vehicles that can run through pretty much anything in there and still get the troops where they need to go.”

The new troop-bearing vehicles will be able to carry out basic duties including communication and medical staff, as well as munitions, communications gear and any additional equipment that the troops will need.

Atlantic plans to utilize the vehicles for missions such as constructing bridges and roads. The equipment will also be vital in the event of any sort of military conflict, as the company wants to make sure that the US troops can still function in the event of a roadside bomb attack or a vehicle destruction.

The first vehicles will be placed in service this year and according to Armentrout, the company is able to get deliveries in the following months, so that at least some of the vehicles are in place by next summer.
